New Scientist reports the first death from chronic fatigue syndrome. The victim was a 32 year old woman in the UK who had suffered from the condition for six years.
The tragic death of this young woman may lend credit to the case the CFS is a bonafide physical condition - not a psychiatric one - as claimed by some. The disease can cause many serious symptoms and is thought to be a dysfunction of the immune system. It is difficult to diagnose and thus the controversy over its etiology.
Hopefully this may spur more research into the cause of this condition and that some interventions can be devised.
Casey Fero and Alison Hunter also had CFS, also both dead, aged 23 and 19.
