Fuelish Administration Finally Sets Tougher Standards for Energy Hogging Vehicles
"U.S.
Sets Fuel-Economy Limits, Categories for Trucks (Update5)" from Bloomberg,
reports that the Bush administration has, under pressure from soaring energy
prices, told automakers to hike the mileage that such gas sucking vehicles as
light trucks, vans and SUVs. The standards will range from 21.3 mpg for the
largest 2011 models to 28.4 for the smallest light trucks, said Rae Tyson, a
spokesman for the National Highway Traffic Administration.
The automakers felt the new standards "challenging" and environmental
groups felt them "timid".
Both groups should suck it up. This will help US automakers who seem to have
difficulty doing the right thing in the face of slumping stock evaluations and
sales. The environmental groups whose demands at times have been costly, need
to look at what they can do besides complain.
They have until 2011 but they will complain that it can't be done until 2010 and hope to get the rules relaxed.
