In Brief: Underwear Underwhelms - Jockey Club Membership Denied to Hussein?
"Hussein
Photos in Tabloids Prompt US Call to Investigate" is the latest big
deal to be made about inconsequential and disproportionate outrage over pictures
of Saddam Hussein in his underwear. For a man who publicly and proudly executed
on film opponents, this is hardly unfair and rough treatment, despite the mews
of indignation from several international human rights bodies and of course,
the US, not wanting deja vu of the Newsweek imbroglio, is calling for investigations.
How many millions and manpower will this take? This is a man who was snapped
in his swiim trunks. He is a public figure - ask any celebrity who has had unwanted
photos snapped by the papparazzi. The world is soon going to get a major case
of Geneva fatigue over these non-incidents relative to the real horrors of the
Saddam era and of the terrorist infested insurgency. Perhaps the Paris Hilton-
Rick Solomon tape needs to go through Geneva Convention rubrics - was she not
unaware that this would go global - what about the "House of Wax"
and "Simple Life" starlets injured dignity relative to Saddam?
Where is the human rights communities' condemnation of the rape rooms, mass
graves, and the sleazy Oil-For-Food deals that allowed Saddam to camp out in
palaces while the lives of his people deterioriated? Mr. Hussein is lucky to
be under the care of the United States rather than his own country - there may
be some scores to be settled there.
Definitely. Show all the pictures they want of him, the more embarrassing the better.
