Merryman said parents who are overinvolved in directing their children's lives have had bad results, with children become anxious and not confident. She criticized the self-esteem movement, noting that self-esteem is a result of achievement. Ingraham spoke about parents not taking the time to teach children basic tasks as they rush around from activity to activity. Merryman said the emphasis shouled be on building a child's resilience.
