China's VP and presumptive leader Xi Jinping met with US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Wednesday. Xi had been the subject of international speculation after he was off the world stage for several weeks and missed key events. China has also been suspicious of the US's intentions as the US has shifted its focus to the region, especially with recent tensions between Japan and China.
"I believe that your visit will be very helpful in further advancing the state-to-state and mil-to-mil (military-to-military) relations between our two countries," Xi told Panetta during a welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People.
