A new meme is even creeping into the mainstream media: an energized GOP in contrast to a demoralized Democrat party.
The week began with a huge victory by Governor Scott Walker in the Wisconsin recall where the GOP ground game and funding swamped the Democrat opponent, echoing the 2010 midterms. The leaders of Obama's liberal base at Netroots Nation are complaining that he isn't doing enough on their priorities of higher taxes, health care and the economy. This is reflected in the depressed fundraising numbers for the Mitt Romney and the GOP versus Obama and the Democrats for the month of May. Poll numbers are indicating a much more competitive race much faster than anticipated.
The cold hard metrics make it difficult for the mainstream media to spin it otherwise. The enthusiasm gap is clear. It will now be up to the GOP to not be complacent and squander this opportunity but to capitalize and take their message to all corridors of the electorate.
