President Obama, after stonewalling on an unforced error pitting a contraception mandate for Catholic institutions in their health care plans and the First Amendment tenet of religious freedom, offered a walkback during what could be a difficult presidential campaign. This fig leaf has been met warily by Catholic officials with Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, head of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops saying he is encouraged byt needs to examine the details.
