Laura Ingraham hosted Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal columnist, former Reagan speechwriter.
Noonan said she hates to join the pile-on Romney's poor comment, but said it was almost Martian-like for anyone to make such a statement, let alone for a conservative - and it was verbally inept. She said almost every American identifies themselves as the middle class and that Romney's over analysis was weird. Ingraham pointed out other wealthy politicians who were able to be comfortable with their wealth and yet empathize with the poor. Noonan said he should say that he is aiming to have all boats rise and everyone to become rich. Ingraham pointed to Romney's extreme generosity as evidence that he cares for those in need, but that conservatives clear a higher hurdle on this issue. Noonan said conservatives are concerned about the income gap among Americans. Ingraham cited Jack Kemp and his approach to poverty and that Romney will have to engage and go to the places where people are poor. Noonan said conservatives have to show they have a heart as their positions are portrayed in such a way that they don't. Noonan referenced Reagan's Bedford-Stuyvesant visit in the 1980's. She suggested that Romney should make a speech that explains his gaffes and Ingraham said there is a perception that Romney's consultants are making up his policies for him rather than having them come from the heart. Noonan said Reagan was easy to write for because it was crystal clear what he believed.
