Laura Ingraham hosted Gerald Walpin, recently fired Inspector General of AmeriCorps, on why the Obama administration thought it was time for him "to move on."
Ingraham reviewed Walpin's stellar resume. Walpin said his department was asked tp investigate a scandal brewing misappropriation of money in Sacramento by AmeriCorps head Kevin Johnson that was confirmed by the corporation. Walpin said Johnson never took advantage of his option to respond to charges and didn't. Instead Walpin found out when he was in a car that while President Obama appreciated his service, but that he was to resign or would be fired. He said that the company was upset about his report and First Lady Michelle Obama had a hand, allegedly.
He said AmeriCorps does a lot of good work. He said he has confidence in his reputation, but is concerned about the status of inspector generals who get punished for doing their job in following up on wrongdoing. The Inspector General Reform Act that then Senator Obama sponsored, was not followed.
Some of the service advocates say that First Lady Michelle Obama is calling shots on activities at AmeriCorps and that some of her staff has been moved over there - and that she has a great interest in the organization. He said he thought when he got the call from the White House, he thought it was to support Sonia Sotomayor whom he knows and does support.
Walpin said that he doesn't know any more than the general public about Barack Obama's relationship with Kevin Johnson - but that he is just doing his job.
The amount of money involved was $850,000 and that the records have allegedly been erased or destroyed in this case which Walpin referred ot the FBI. Senator Grassley has raised concerns about this issue.
