Laura Ingraham hosted Dr. Ben Chavis on how he turned a failing inner-city school into one of California's best, shattering liberal education myths in the process.
Chavis said the results have come because his school strictly instructs in math and reading. He said that children love structure and that most schools are designed for the comfort of teachers. He said that he teaches to the state standards and accepts this charge - and doesn't teach to the test because he doesn't know how to do this - he teaches the basic principles of math, reading and writing.
Chavis, a Native American himself, took over the American Indian Charter Schools in 2000 and dumped the multicultural theme. He said that liberals don't like him because he thinks there should be standards for all students. He said he learned his lessons via sports where there is no affirmative action - just results. He got his PhD at the University of Arizona. He said poverty is the best motivator in the world and he'd rather have poor children than rich to teach for this reason. He said it is racist mentality to not believe minorities shouldn't have standards. He said he's never had a child who stuck with his school get shot - but several have who dropped out. He said that teachers shouldn't need to be trained by the school and if people are lazy he fires them.
Chavis said there are no computers in his schools or cell phones - no thiefs will steal computers or cell phones at his school.

The rules of the game have changed, it seems. Never underestimate the power of really stupid people who only care about enriching themselves and holding some level of self perceived power (and we’re talking politicians and average citizens here).

I could read excellent ideas and hopes from here, but we should create anther style of learning because sometimes students feel bored to learn they need motivation and new practices.

Dr.Chavis is my distant cousin & applaud what he's doing. Our tribe needs education reforms too,but we are not light years behind, like most Native communities...Natives have contributed to the progress of this Nation from the very begining but we get no acknowlegment ??? See the Congressional resolution 331/The Iroquois contrubution to the Constitution of the U.S...Mary G.Ross 1908-2008(Cherokee/Oklahoma)she designed the first U.S.Satellite our Ballisic Missle Systems etc.etc..

The nineteenth century historian, Scott holds that a remarkable correspondence exists between the procedure established by those institutions and the methods of the present day. They had their collegiate courses, their prizes for proficiency in scholarship, their oratorical and poetical contests, their commencements and their degrees. Thanks.
