Laura Ingraham hosted Wendy Long of the Judicial Confirmation Network on President Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice David Souter.
Long said that Obama preferred an intellectual on the court while Rahm Emanuel was pushing for a political choice - and thus Sotomayor won out. Long said that being a woman and a Latina plays into the identity politics of the Democrats with a big personal story. Long said if a white male had made the points about his background, there would have been fireworks of criticism. Ingraham said Obama highlighted Sotomayor's background over her judicial resume to make this a pressure pick for senators and to gloss over her more radical aspects of being a judicial activist. Long noted that Justice Thomas' background got no such treatment as it wasn't politically correct and Justice Thomas is a conservative.
Long said that senators who voted for Sotomayor for earlier judicial seats can go after her on her recent rulings, especially on the New Haven firefighters affirmative action case statements. Ingraham said she has a very high reversal rate from the Supreme Court. Long said that Souter was more moderate on business rulings and that this could slip with Sotomayor.
Long said that Sotomayor's reputation as a bully works against her judicial temperment for objectivity and Ingraham said that people should be educated on the judicial process. Long said she is coming with an agenda and that Obama to present her as a bipartisan candidate for the courts.
