"Meet The Press" with David Greogory on May 31st focused, not surprisingly, on Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor with Senators Patrick Leahy and Jeff Sessions of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The issues that have dominated the cable news cycle were brought up with both senators carefully picking their words while defending their party turf - Sotomayor's controversial remarks on a Latina woman making better judgments than a white man, her decision in the New Haven firefighters and President Obama's own filibuster efforts against Justice Alito while now calling for confirmation of Sotomayor as quickly as possible.
The discussion of the economy was more sobering with Obama supporter Eric Schmidt of Google putting the best spin on the effects of the stimulus, outgoing Xerox CEO Anne Mulcahy talking about taking her company back from the brink of bankruptcy, the paucity of women in the executive suites and a more restrained assessment of the economy and of Jim Owens of Caterpillar who advocated for global trade as the way out of the recession.
The most egregious segment was the last one that was basically an advertisement for Katty Kay's new book Womenomics on women, Richard Wolffe's new book, Renegade being released on Monday and written at the suggestion of President Obama and NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams fawningly and glowingly promoting the NBC special "Inside the Obama White House". NBC clearly lives up to its title as the embarrassingly open advocate for the Obama administration.
