Supreme Court Justice Souter to retire from NPR reports that 69 year old Justice Souter will stem down at the end of the current court term - or until his sucessor is chosen.
This won't radically tilt the court as Souter, who was a Republican appointment of President George H.W. Bush didn't turn out to be any staunch conservative - but with President Obam's very liberal leanings, it would seem the SCOTUS will be pulled or tugged to the left.
Conservatives target Sotomayor, Kagan, Wood
Possible nominees who have been mentioned as being on a theoretical short list include Elena Kagan, the current solicitor general who represents the government before the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomaor, a Hispanic judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and Diane Wood, a federal judge in Chicago who taught at the University of Chicago at the same time future president Barack Obama was teaching constitutional law there.
