The New York Times held a35 minute interview with President Barack Obama
on a flight back from Ohio on Friday in which he repeated some oft stated themes on the economy - that on one hand the economy needs a huge infusion of support - and that he doesn't have the luxury of a modest recession - but that his plans are consonant with free market capitalism - and that his predecessor also expanded government quite vigorously. There is an irony in Obama using the man he ran against policies as a justification for his own. Obama also called on Americans to invest in the markets - even as his economic Oracle Warren Buffett predicted a long time before the economy would recover. One wonders if the Obamas have directed their portfolio manager to buy low right now.
On the Afghanistan front, Obama opened the door to outreach with the Taliban - and again cited a man whom he appeared to diss when he was in the Senate and General Petraeus testified about the surge that again President Bush and his opponent John McCain supported - perhaps because Obama had his MoveOn.org constituency to pacify.
“If you talk to General Petraeus, I think he would argue that part of the success in Iraq involved reaching out to people that we would consider to be Islamic fundamentalists, but who were willing to work with us because they had been completely alienated by the tactics of Al Qaeda in Iraq,” Mr. Obama said.
At the same time, he acknowledged that outreach may not yield the same success. “The situation in Afghanistan is, if anything, more complex,” he said. “You have a less governed region, a history of fierce independence among tribes. Those tribes are multiple and sometimes operate at cross purposes, and so figuring all that out is going to be much more of a challenge.”
