Russia Bites Off A Fifth of Georgia As It "Agrees" to Ceasefire In 5 Day War
"Russia 'annexes' a fifth of Georgia" from the UK Telegraph reports that Russia got a nice land grab for their trouble in Georgia, in essence South Ossetia and Abkhazia in their control - which is a fifth of the country. France's President Nicholas Sarkozy, EU head, signed off on the ceasefire with Russian President Medvedev - but not until the Russians got their slice and some demands.

While Russian troops have been deployed in these enclaves since 1992, they have never previously controlled their entire territory.
Having achieved this by force, Moscow's terms for a permanent truce would cement its gains. The Kremlin has also demonstrated its indifference to western opinion and its willingness to use force to prevent a former Soviet republic from joining Nato.
