"McCain’s Canal Zone Birth Prompts Queries About Whether That Rules Him Out" from the NY Times raises the constitutional question if Senator McCain is "natural born" according to the US Constitution because he was born at a military installation in the Panama Canal Zone on August 29, 1936. The issue had been raised for others in the past, including ironically George Romney who was born in Mexico and is the father of former candidate Governor Mitt Romney, who was a candidate himself at one time.
It seems that the New York Times is raising every issue it can to derail the candidacy of Senator McCain's candidacy - especially since there are polls that make him appear competitive against either Democratic candidate - and hardly a case of grave concern over the Constitution. Would America like to tell parents of our military assigned overseas after they have defended America that there children who are citizens cannot aspire to be president - while those who have done far less for America can?
Given that this story comes after the Times attempt to smear Senator McCain with an unsubstantiated story about connections with a lobbyist, it lends less credibility to their alleged concerns about the Constitution - that come into play only when the rights of anyone but our military, ordinary US citizens come into play - but is very important when the rights of detainees, terrorists, etc. are on the line.
