Teddy Bear Teacher Laid Bare Sudan's Problems - And Is Pardoned
"Freedom for jailed teddy bear teacher as Sudanese government grant her full pardon" from the UK Daily Mail reports that Gillian Gibbons, the 54 year old teacher jailed for allowing students to name a teddy bear "Muhammed" - which was deemed an insult by extremist Muslims and caused rioting and rallying, will go free and be given a pardon by the Sudanese government. She could have received 40 lashes and more extensive jail time. Muslim members of the British parliament intervened and Gibbons will be taking a flight out of Sudan today.
With its abysmal international record vis-a-vis Darfur and this latest debacle, it would seem the Sudanese government would like this story off the front pages - which has laid bare-bear the intense problems in the country in stark terms.
