"Visa Complications Force Saudi Students to Hold US Weddings" from Arab News reports that Saudi students, due to visa snafus and complications, stay on the US when they come here to study and don't go home for family events, including weddings, funerals, etc.. The students express frustration at this all.
While the students aren't to blame for the fact that the visa situation has tightened, it is a frustration that is shared by all Americans with passports, visas, etc. - as well as the restrictions as they board planes. In addition, US troops are deployed in the Middle East to fight terrorism that is in many cases spawned by extremists from Saudi Arabia. Finally, given that most of the September 11th hijackers were Saudis, it would seem that the families of the victims won't have a lot of sympathy for the plight of these students who have been welcomed to study here in the US.
Difficulties in obtaining US visas — including rejection of visa applications and unnecessary delays — mean many Saudi students, once they arrive in the US, do not return to the Kingdom until their studies are completed. This means staying in the US during holidays, and missing weddings and funerals.
