Imm: Pakistan Under Increasing Grip Of Talibanization

"Pakistan Emergency Amidst Growing Talibanization" by Jeffrey Imm at the Counterterrorism Blog reports that the state of emergency that has been declared by President Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan has been due to the increased power of the Taliban in the Swat area - and the growing Islamist sentiment among Pakistan's citizens who want Sharia law in place.  The constitution has been suspended for the time being and martial law imposed.

The area is acting as a state within a state - to the point that the army and police are surrendering and the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. (NWFP) are looking to meet the Taliban's demands.

Musharraf stated as rationale, "visible ascendancy in the activities of extremists and incidents of terrorist attacks, including suicide bombings, IED explosions, rocket firing and bomb explosions and the banding together of some militant groups have taken such activities to an unprecedented level of violent intensity posing a grave threat to the life and property of the citizens of Pakistan."

Not a great situation in a country gone nuclear and moving toward an Islamist state under Sharia law...
