Fred Thompson With Laura Ingraham
Laura Ingraham hosted presidential candidate Fred Thompson.
Thompson said it is important for a candidate, not necessarily a president, have fire in the belly for the job with all that is going on. He said he is in the race because he is concerned about the country and the choices ahead - and he feels he can do something about it as leader of this country such as national security, fiscal crisis looming, the rancor in Congress - basically looking from election to election rather than the long term. He said that people are dispirited due to spending issues. Thompson said that his motivation for campaign finance was the soft money issue. He said that adding on the issues ad portion wasn't a good thing. He said it is a legitimate function of government to say that leaders shouldn't get unlimited funding from people's whose issues they are voting on - it is bribery.
Thompson said it is an unfair expectation to compare himself to Reagan, but it is part of the political game - but there are things that should be emulated that Reagan believed.
Thompson said he is for finishing the fence and securing the borders - and that Mexico should think about why they are exporting their population to work here.
Thompson said he will nominate justices who decide cases, not causes. He said justices need to interpret the Constitution and not make the law.
