China Goes For A Pre-Olympic Win: Peacekeeping In Darfur To Keep Critics At Bay & Provide Contrast With West

"In China, a Display of Resolve on Darfur" from the Washington Post reports that China appears to be answering their critics who have slammed them for their tacit approval of the Sudanese government - in order to mine their resources - and are sending in peacekeepers into the harrowing Darfur region.

This would be a twofer for China - they will get critics off their back about kowtowing to dictators that allow genocides in their midst - and will contrast them with the US and the West in being peacemakers rather than war mongers.  What will tell the tale is how much China will protect the humans in their charge and how much they will use this as a PR stunt.  For the sake of the long suffering people of Darfur, one hopes that they get better treatment than many of the oppressed in China - and that China won't turn a blind eye to the abuses of the Sudanese government - but don't count on it.
