Administration To Enforce Immigration Laws After 6 Years
"US seeks to curb illegal immigration" from AP reports that the Bush administration says they will rely on tools they already have to curb illegal immigration - a not so tacit admission that they haven't been enforcing the law vigorously for the past six years.
Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff and Commerce Secretary Gutierez held a joint conference and pointed fingers at Congress for any distress that employers may face as they crack down on them for hiring illegal immigrants.
"Our hope is that key elements of the Senate bill will see the light of day someday, but until Congress chooses to act, we are going to be taking some energetic steps of our own," Chertoff said. The steps will "significantly strengthen our hand with respect to immigration enforcement."
