Doubting Scott Thomas - Whoever He May Be

"Stephen Glass Meets The Winter Soldiers" by MacKubin Thomas Owen and "Anonymous in Iraq" by Kathleen Parker discuss the New Republic's anonymous soldier-diarist "Scott Thomas" who has sent dispatches from Iraq and has written allegations about certain acts by soldiers that have been disputed by many other soldiers - reminiscent of the tales from the "Winter Soldiers" during the Vietnam War.

While this may have been easier during the Vietnam War days, with so many military bloggers, embedded reporters and available technology, it is much more difficult and questionable as to why this diarist has to remain anonymous (supposedly it is so there aren't reprisals against him).  This seems suspicious - and it wouldn't be the first time that the New Republic has gone with a preconceived agenda rather than the facts at hand as with the infamous Stephen Glass that Owen notes.

There are reprisals now for what seems questionable reporting and perhaps shady journalism - a smear on the honor of our troops and a disgrace.
