Liberal Talk Radio Has To Solve Its Own Problems Sans Fairness Doctrine
"Radio Free American" from the Weekly Standard takes on the ugly specter of the Fairness Doctrine reappearing on the media scene to tamp down free speech as a slap at the First Amendment, primarily by left wing politicians and their supporters who have tried in vain to compete in the talk radio arena and in the main, have failed or had a far lesser impact than conservative talk radio.
The argument that Americans need to hear both sides of an argument begs the question - what are the sides of an issue are - and who are the arbiters to decide what we should all hear? Needless to say the left wing would like to be in charge of that decision - to the point that the nation could be like a communist or totalitarian state with the electorate dictated to - and in the worst case scenario - we'd need something akin to the old "Radio Free Europe" to get other voices to the masses.
As Philip Terzian correctly points out, liberal talk radio has to figure out why they aren't attracting an audience rather than handicapping everyone else - not to make it everyone's problem to the point of limiting free speech.
