AP's "Senate Blocks Immigration Bill" reports that the Senate has deep sixed the highly flawed coomprehensive immigration bill, S1348. The vote was 46 to 53 to limit the debate. Due to the volatility of the issue, this will probably not be revisited before next year's presidential election.
What is sad is that there are parts of immigration that do need reforming - starting with strengthening both north and south borders, ports and shores, cracking down on employers, deporting criminals, cracking down on sanctuary cities, devising that tamper proof ID card, promoting merit based immigration, etc.. But doe the the sell out provisions of this bill, these things will be delayed if done at all.
What will be interesting is to see if Bush does in fact enforce the law and crack down on employers - or was this all for show?
