Allen-Webb Debate Lively, Informative
The citizens of Virginia got the opportunity to see a lively, informative debate between former Navy Secretary James Webb and Senator George Allen. The format was variable which allowed the candidates to ask questions of one another as well as answer questions from a moderator and a panel. The questions were more balanced and far-reaching than those on "Meet The Press" and thus were more informative.
Senator Allen, who seemed to speak from party talking points on "Meet The Press" seemed more relaxed, informed and authentic during this debate. He also sounded much sharper than the image that has been painted through some political miscues. Webb is a smart and tough opponent - Allen is a more likeable personality, but also showed that he is a lot smarter than portrayed in the media.
Mr. Allen did a better job in portraying a more positive image - and did a better job of closing the deal in the final statement where Mr. Webb went negative - which may appeal to the base but may not attract new voters. Mr. Webb used one of his questions to Senator Allen it seemed clearly to trap him when asking about islands near China and Japan that are rich in natural resources. It was an Al Gore moment and not the most attractive as it is clear he is intelligent and articulate. Allen handled it well - honestly saying that he would have to look into it further and didn't try to bluff his way through the answer. Allen went over the top by exceeding his time limits quite a bit - more aggressive this time around.
Hopefully many Virginians got to see this debate as it cuts through the ads and got to the issues.
