Snapshot of Miers Writings Show Her to be Christian in Spirit
"A Look at the Writings of Harriet Miers" linked to the Drudge
Report, indicates that Ms. Miers suppoerted civil rights for gays and AIDS
education when invovled in Dallas politics and also had a tough law and order
approach although was also supportive of improving conditions that led to criminal
behavior.
These were headlined as if they were big news. However, there would seem to
be a minority in this country who would not accord civil rights to gays - regardless
of where they stand on the gay marriage issue - and as VP Cheney has an openly
gay daughter who serves faithfully, it is doubtful that the administration would
be against this concept.
Her support for AIDS education for students is also important. AIDS education
does not automatically translate to condom distribution and any education as
to its dangers and that of promiscuity. Again, while people may disagree with
the content and concepts of an AIDS education course, to ignore AIDS as a major
health risk is dangerous and foolish. AIDS is a health risk to heterosexuals
as well as gays and needs to be dealt with.
This sort of not too subtle insinuations are what turn people away from the
fringe of the GOP and reinforce the perception of intolerance in the party -
and overshadow the rest of the agenda.
Her stands on law and order sound reasonable and her work with the group in
Dallas that helps prisoners and families after prison is consistent with the
president's agenda and commendable - and very Christian.
bringing up Cheney's daughter in reference to Republican policy towards gays?? Didn't Kerry do that? and What civil right was being referred to here? the right the avoid job discrimination? inheritance? marriage? parenthood? military participation? Support of civil rights for gay people means universal acceptance of them as whole people who get to do whatever any other adult citizen gets to do without fear of retribution or limits. That doesn't sound very Republican to me.
