8/05 - Second Term 9/11? Reborn on the Bayou?
In an ironic twist, 8/05 may become the 9/11 crisis of the second Bush administration.
While the terror has been inflicted by Mother Nature rather than Osama bin Laden,
some of the issues are strikingly the same - terrific economic blow during a
robust economic recovery, our dependence on foreign energy sources and another
test of leadership and the American character. Unlike the wars in Afghanistan
and Iraq, these are on the domestic front and will surely test our red-blue
state sensibilities as we seek solutions.
However, there will be a few silver linings. The president will get a chance
to be presidential and has brother Jeb as his wingman on the natural disaster
front. The focus on domestic issues will give a brief respite from the Cindy
Sheehan/Jane Fonda bus tours which will appear unseemly when fellow citizens
are living in third world conditions. Likewise, carping about the Gitmo situation
should recede for a bit - where would anyone rather be - in the Superdome in
New Orleans or getting custom cooked meals at Gitmo?
Environmentalists who will no doubt be ready to carp about global warming,
energy and the fragile delta geography may hold their fire if they can't fire
up their Hummers or private jets or get fuel for their second homes. NIMBY may
become a dirty word and nuclear, solar and wind power buzz words of the hour.
Man as an endangered species in the Gulf coast may even take precedence for
a time. Perhaps the amounts spent on aid to taxpaying citizens will not seem
so awful after the millions spent on federal and death penalty cases as these
felons rest in their cells with running water, protection from the elements
and several meals a day.
We may actually have a "Reborn on the Bayou" concert for our fellow
citizens and maybe we can reinvest in the home of jazz, Mardi Gras and a unique
culture in our country.
Perhaps too this can be the area that is reborn with a blend of a proud history
and new technologies to model energy efficiencies and great urban rebirth.
Our fellow law abiding fellow Americans deserve no less - now time for all
of us to deliver.
