Justice Sandra's Day is Done: O'Connor Retires From Supreme Court - "Gang"
Filibuster-bunker on tap?
"O'Connor
to Retire from Supreme Court" from the Washinton Post, reports that
Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is retiring from the Supreme Court.
The tough battle ahead will test the strength of the "Gang of 14"
filibuster resolution as the stakes are very high. One would think that there
will be pressure to appoint a woman to replace O'Connor as well as to appoint
an originalist such as Justice Scalia. The president will have to weigh how much
he will be willing to fight for a candidate to appeal to the conservative base
right away or wait until Justice Rehnquist retires and save any chips for the
Chief Justice position - or if he will fight hard for conservatives for both.
This will probably also serve to put Social Security personal accounts and
other agenda items on the back burner and make the Bolton fight a skirmish relative
to the import of this decision.
Fat Ted and the last of the liberals will oppose ANYONE Bush nominates. Hopefully he can get someone that most of the Dem.'s don't feel are worth fighting over.
