Roberts Catholicism a Bad Prospect According to the American Prospect

In a letter from the Catholic League,
it is noted that Adele Stan of the American Prospect online magazine has taken
issue with Judge John Roberts Roman Catholicism, raising the same tired arguments
made when John F. Kennedy was elected in 1960, insinuating that Roberts would
be running plays signaled in from the Vatican and that President Bush is playing
the conservative Catholic card leading up to the congressional 2006 elections.
She apparently would like liberal Catholics to oppose this nomination due to
    Roberts perceived anti-abortion stance.

Mr. William Donahue, Catholic League president, noted that there were no insinuations
when Justices Ginsberg and Breyer were nominated and confirmed of their religious
affiliation or of pleasing the nation of Israel - and that this was a mark of
progress. Sadly, the American Prospect seems to be trying to revive old Democratic
ties to the Ku Klux Klan with their baiting of Catholics. This is hardly going
to be helpful to their cause in the 2006 elections or in opening anyone's minds
to anything they may have to offer in terms of diversity and separation of church
and state. One wonders what Senator Kennedy would have to say about this.
