Supreme Court to the Supreme Being: "Thou Shalt Not Display Your Commandments in Our Court of Law"
Supreme Court to the Supreme Being: "Thou Shalt Not Display Your Commandments
in Our Court of Law"
"Court:
No Ten Commandments In Courthouse" from the NY Times reports that the
Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, struck down Ten Commandmennts displays in
the nation's courthouses, saying that two displays in Kentucky crossed the line
between church and state because they promoted a religious message.
The narrow ruling allows the Supreme Court's own Commandments display since
it is in a historic context.
One has to wonder how many other images or words have to be displayed with
the Ten Commandments to take them out of the realm of religious message and
into the realm of historic or some other themed display in a courthouse. They
did rule they could be displayed at state capitals, which is a bigger head scratcher.
Where does one think most of our legal code emanated from? It must depend on
what historic is and where the law is deliberated...
There's actually a bill in Congress that will prohibit the Federal courts (and the Supreme Court) from hearing anymore cases like this. S.520 is the Senate version and H.R.1070 is the House version. Write your Congressmen and tell them to sponsor these bills.
