Michelle Malkin at her sparky website
and her Townhall column, gives some of the soldiers' perspectives on the recent
Newsweek imbroglio and other media slights (It's
Not Just Newsweek). Among the offensive coverage is the hyping of stories
that reflect negatively on the military such as Abu Ghraib, alleged recruiting
shenanigans, alleged sexual misconduct by service members, anti-war city council
actions and news editorials, and the portrayal of terrorists as nearly heroic
freedom fighters with euphemisms that cast a positive patina on their malevolent
deeds.
What is too bad is that that many members of the media, including the staff
of Newsweek, did some excellent and even heroic work as embeds, bringing unprecedented
coverage and appreciation of what our military is doing - and putting their
own lives on the line. This is in contrast to the many non-serving self servers
in the media who thump their chests, but are the supreme elites that talk the
talk but would never walk the walk, using the troops and their contributions
to fill their columns, blogs and shows, safely ensconced in their cozy aeries
stateside, vicarious armchair combat warriors. Some don't even visit the troops
they make a living off of.
Thankfully the troops in this war versus previous ones have technology on their
side with access to share their voices without the filters of any sort of media
bias or exploitation on the left or right. Their blogs are the best reportage
we can tap into to get an unvarnished look at history as they defend our freedoms.
