Newsweek Piece Rocks Peace - Who's to blame?
Newsweek Piece Rocks Peace - Who's to Blame?
Reports from Newsweek that the Koran
had been flushed down a toilet at Guantanamo Bay by military interrogators and
that this bit of news had somehow been sort of quasi-confirmed by officials
according to Newsweek, set off deadly demonstrations in the Arab world - despite
denials from the Pentagon that any such activity took place.
First and foremost, any use of any sacred religious symbol such as the Koran
in such a manner is totally unacceptable and one would have to also question
the value of any information obtained by such indecent and profane tactics.
While propagating such incendiary news is despicable and should be followed
up on immediately, there should also be repercussions for those inciting the
violent demonstrations. The words of the Koran, as with any sacred text, are
most important in how they are lived, not in how they are represented in the
print. Any lack of respect shown to important symbols is a lack of respect to
the people who hold them dear. However, to use such reports as a reason to set
off violence and disobey the highest tenets of Islam - to purposefully set up
situations so one's own people are killed, is also unacceptable. The lives of
the believers in the Islamic teachings is also sacred and such activities debase
those lives.
One has to questions both the motives and forethought of the staff at Newsweek
to "get the get" and those that fanned the flames of this tragic incident
in the Islamic world. There are clearly no heroes in this terrible incident
and as always, it is the innocent who pay.
My immediate thought is--what kind of toilet could you flush a book down? If the Koran is half as thick as the Bible this would not even be possible!
